COLUMBUS, OHIO — On Saturday, a small group of neo-Nazis marched through downtown Columbus, Ohio, showing their presence by shouting racist epithets and brandishing flags bearing swastikas. The community was rocked by the demonstration in the Short North neighborhood, a bustling area renowned for its boutiques, cafes, and art galleries.
There were around a dozen marchers, all wearing black shirts, jeans, and red masks that covered their faces. The video clip immediately went viral on the internet, showing three people carrying black flags with red swastikas and one guy chanting the N-word repeatedly. While their leader used a bullhorn to amplify their message, the marchers marched past local establishments such as a salon, apparel stores, and restaurants offering tacos and coffee.
Local Officials Respond to Hate-Fueled Display
The unsettling march was not overlooked by local authorities. Mayor Andrew Ginther of Columbus swiftly denounced the protest, calling it a cowardly act and reaffirming the city’s resolve to combat intolerance and hatred. Ginther posted on social media that “we will not permit any of our neighbors to be threatened, intimidated, or harmed because of who they are, how they worship, and whom they love.”
In his remarks, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said that the protesters were using deplorable and racist language toward Jews and people of color. Around 1:30 p.m., several 911 calls reported the march, prompting police to arrive on the scene; however, no one was taken into custody. Although further information is still pending, some of the marchers were temporarily detained by Columbus police.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, there were 282 instances of hate-fueled meetings last year, setting a new record for the number of events hosted by White nationalist organizations. Zach Klein, the city attorney, said on social media, “Take your flags and the masks you hide behind and go home and never come back,” joining others in denouncing the neo-Nazi demonstration. We don’t tolerate your bigotry in our city. This is not who we are, he added, and we will not accept or normalize this repulsive worldview in any way.
