VICTORIA, TX On the afternoon of December 11, four persons were hurt when a small plane crashed in the center of an intersection in Victoria, Texas. While authorities look into the cause of the strange accident, the local community was disrupted and roads were closed.
Crash Details and Location
The collision happened on Wednesday at approximately 3 p.m. at the junction of Mockingbird Lane and a feeder road that leads to Zac Lentz Parkway. The twin-engine Piper PA-31 was trying to make an emergency landing after its gasoline ran out. Before coming to a halt, the aircraft collided with two cars and a light pole.
The cars involved suffered severe damage in the collision, which happened in Victoria, around 150 miles southwest of Houston. Soon after the collision, authorities arrived on the scene to evaluate the situation and administer medical attention.
Injuries and Medical Response
The only person inside the plane, the pilot, was assessed medically on the spot but did not need to be taken to the hospital. The collision injured three people on the ground. Their injuries were not life-threatening, and they were sent to a nearby hospital. Victoria Police Deputy Chief Eline Moya said that one victim was later moved to another hospital for additional care.
We are relieved that it wasn’t worse than it is, Moya stated at a press conference. We don’t see something like this very often. However, we are happy that people are being looked out and appear to be in good health.
Road Closures and Traffic Impact
As of Thursday morning, the intersection of the feeder road and Mockingbird Lane was still closed due to the collision. Roads will be closed for a few days while crews clean debris and conduct an investigation, according to local authorities.
Access to Victoria East High School was among the transportation routes that were impacted by the disruption. The campus opened earlier than normal on Thursday at 6:30 a.m. to fit the school’s timetable, giving students more time to drop off.
The cause of the incident is being looked into by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The aircraft had run out of fuel prior to attempting the emergency landing, according to the preliminary report.
