The startling incident happened on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, when a group of hikers claimed to have heard a gunshot and found a man who was critically hurt at the summit.
Hikers Discover Disturbing Scene on Emory Peak
On November 27, at approximately 4 p.m., hikers at 7,832-foot-high Emory Peak heard a gunshot and discovered a man who was seriously hurt. The group requested assistance by calling 911 right away. Helicopters from the Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Customs Air and Marine Operations, and the National Park Service promptly mobilized to help rescue the man’s body.
With the help of the helicopter teams, park rangers managed to make it to the top. The Florence, Texas, man, 35, was already dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when they arrived. In anticipation of the recovery effort, which was conducted early the next morning, the park ranger stayed on the spot all night.
