NORTH FORT MYERS, FLA A horrifying early-morning fire in North Fort Myers, Florida, almost claimed a life, but two quick-thinking deputies intervened and bravely pulled a crippled man who was injured through a window as the fire engulfed his house.
When Deputy Trainee Tyler Voege and Field Training Officer Rachel Bauer-Fithian from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the site of a huge house fire on Sunday morning, the dramatic rescue took place.
Every heart-pounding minute as the deputies fought through dense smoke and deadly flames to rescue the man trapped inside was captured in body-worn camera footage that was made public on Monday.
Desperate Struggle Inside the Burning House
The individual was stranded in a bedroom, unable to flee the escalating fire, when the deputies initially arrived. At first, Bauer-Fithian attempted to crawl inside the house, but she was forced back outside by the dense, oppressive smoke. She regrouped and came up with a fresh plan in a flash, coughing and panting for oxygen.
She asked Voege to assist in smashing the window of the bedroom. They can be seen on camera smashing the glass, covering the jagged edges with a blanket, and then reaching in to remove the victim. The air was filled with the man’s agonized screams as they fought to extricate him from the flaming building.
Flames Engulf the Home as Rescue Is Completed
Dense black smoke and smoldering flames filled the house as the deputies dragged him to safety. The harrowing moment as the flames raged behind them is captured in the video.
After being taken to a nearby hospital, the injured man is receiving treatment for wounds he received during the incident. More information about his condition has not been released by the authorities.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
