, a quick response from Roosevelt Elementary School staff prevented what could have been a devastating event. On Thursday, school staff confronted a 13-year-old boy who attempted to enter the building carrying two “suspicious bags,” according to police, leading to his eventual arrest and a close call for the community.

School Staff’s Swift Response Prevents Entry

The incident began when the teen, holding a backpack and a black duffel bag, tried to enter Roosevelt Elementary School through a side door. School staff immediately took action, stopping the boy before he could enter.

The boy ran off, and school officials placed the school on a “secure hold” as a safety precaution, keeping students in classrooms while ensuring no unauthorized entry.

Police Investigation Uncovers Concerning Evidence

Hours later, Kenosha police apprehended the boy around 2 p.m. Although police have not confirmed if he was armed at the school, authorities believe the black duffel bag contained a firearm. Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton stated, “We believe that this was actually an armed suspect with a firearm, and there was no legitimate reason to enter the school.”

Further investigation revealed a disturbing video of the teen practicing “rudimentary techniques” with a semi-automatic rifle. Police also discovered he had made several online searches related to school shootings.

Chief Patton urged the public to report concerns immediately, saying, “This video shouldn’t have been seen by us today. This should have been reported to us earlier…We’re just going to re-encourage everybody when they see something, say something, help us out. Have those talks with your children.”

School Safety Protocols Credited for Quick Action

Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Weiss praised the effectiveness of the school’s safety procedures.

“Today we experienced something that all school staff and families fear — a potential school shooting,” he said. “Today we are thankful.”

Weiss highlighted that Roosevelt Elementary’s preparation and vigilance helped prevent what could have been a tragedy.

Cooperation from the Teen’s Family

Police confirmed that the boy’s mother is cooperating fully with the investigation, aiding authorities in understanding the boy’s intentions and the source of the weapon.

As Roosevelt Elementary’s staff and local police reflect on a day that could have ended differently, the incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and thorough preparation. Kenosha’s leaders remain committed to protecting students and supporting families as they discuss these crucial safety conversations at home.
