ILI, WILLIAMSON COUNTYA sheriff’s officer in Williamson County, Illinois, successfully halted a rogue vehicle early Monday morning to keep it from crashing into Crab Orchard Lake in a stressful and dangerous situation. Before deputies were able to step in, the pregnant woman’s car had been out of control for a few minutes.

The 911 Call and Initial Response

The driver of the escaped car reported that her car was unable to stop and called 911 at around 2:02 a.m. The vehicle was heading west on Old Route 13 close to Division Street in Carterville when deputies swiftly arrived on the scene and began pursuing it. Even though the brake lights were clearly on, the car did not slow down and kept moving at around 30 mph.

Deputies determined that the scenario was too risky to let the car drive on unchecked as it approached Crab Orchard Lake. The officers decided to start a rolling road block as a safe way to stop the vehicle because they were worried that it might crash straight into the lake.

The Critical Maneuver

One of the deputies started to slowly slow down after pulling in front of the fugitive vehicle. The patrol vehicle’s rear bumper was then lightly struck by the deputy, causing both cars to stop. The automobile successfully executed the maneuver and stopped about a quarter of a mile from the lake.

Sheriff Jeff Diederich stated in a statement that the driver and vehicle would have probably gone into the water upon arriving at the lake if the deputy had not been present or had delayed carrying out this move.

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman’s automobile only sustained minor damage, and the police car was undamaged. What may have been a catastrophic situation was resolved peacefully thanks to the deputies’ prompt and cautious efforts.
