Illinois Parents Charged in Death of 2-Year-Old Girl in Homer Glen Home

Homer Glen, IL – A couple from Homer Glen has been charged following the tragic death of their 2-year-old daughter, Trinity Balen-Weiher, on Nov. 7. Deputies from the Will County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call late Wednesday night at a home in the 12200 block of W. Thorn Apple Drive, where the child was found unresponsive.

According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the girl’s father, Edward Weiher, 49, was attempting chest compressions on Trinity when deputies arrived. Initial reports suggested a possible carbon monoxide leak, but emergency responders later confirmed no gas leak was present. Instead, investigators uncovered a home filled with garbage, rotten food, and evidence of drug use, along with 9 grams of heroin and 21 Xanax pills allegedly within reach of Trinity and her six-year-old sibling, who was later taken into protective custody by Illinois DCFS.

Both parents, Weiher and Alexa Balen, 27, reportedly made incriminating statements to detectives. They face multiple felony charges for child endangerment and unlawful possession of controlled substances. Weiher remains detained, with a pretrial hearing set for Thursday, while Balen awaits detention pending release from medical care.

An autopsy and toxicology report are underway, with further charges possible as the investigation proceeds.
