Immigration Arrests in Los Angeles Spike Amid Aggressive Enforcement

Since the Trump administration has sent hundreds of agents and military personnel to crack down on the Los Angeles area, the number of arrests made by the Department of Homeland Security has increased throughout the past month.

According to the organization, homeland security officers and agents have detained about 2,800 unauthorized immigrants in the Los Angeles region since the start of June. According to data gathered through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by the Deportation Data Project at the University of California, Berkeley law school, the previous monthly high for immigration arrests in the Los Angeles area by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2025 was just over 850 arrests in May.

Immigrant populations are feeling cold as a result of the region’s extensive enforcement campaign. Parks and sidewalks in many districts that were previously lively and packed with people and street sellers have become deserted. Empty restaurant booths and open barber chairs are indicators of the economic damage. During Sunday Mass, the pews in many Latino churches have seemed unnaturally roomy.

In a statement, Mayor Karen Bass stated, “This isn’t about violent criminals who are pulling up to chase people through Home Depot parking lots, summer camps, and car washes.” These rash, illegal raids are motivated by racial profiling, which has caused dread in communities, shattering families, destroying entire industries because people are scared to go to work, and going against American democratic ideals.

This Thursday, D.H.S. officials stated that they had no plans to slow down their vigorous enforcement actions.
