Portland, Oregon. The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that Sanjay Kaushik, 57, of Delhi, India, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Portland on allegations of plotting and attempting to unlawfully export regulated aviation technology to Russia.
Kaushik is charged with conspiring to violate the Export Control Reform Act by supplying Russian companies with dual-use aviation components technologies that have both military and civilian applications. A navigation and flight control system that was allegedly acquired under false pretenses from an Oregon source was one of the components in question.
According to the prosecution, Kaushik and his accomplices obtained an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS), a crucial instrument for aircraft navigation and control, with the intention of using it for a civilian helicopter in India. According to authorities, the group intended to divert the equipment to an unidentified Russian destination via India. Before it left the United States, the system was intercepted.
A federal complaint and warrant led to Kaushik’s arrest on October 17 in Miami, Florida. He entered a not guilty plea to the allegations when he appeared in court on Wednesday and was placed under arrest pending his trial, which is scheduled for January 21, 2025.
Kaushik could be imprisoned for up to 20 years and fined $1 million for each offense if found guilty. Federal attorneys with expertise in export control and counterintelligence are prosecuting the case, which is being handled by the Bureau of Industry and Security.
