Indiana Cop Faces Charges After Subjecting Daughter to Freezing Cold with Intimidating Sign

An Indiana police officer is accused of punishing his six-year-old daughter for pouting because she was not permitted to wear lip gloss by making her stand outside in frigid weather while brandishing a sign that threatened her brother.

Cody Scott, a Logansport police officer, and Kylie Scott, his wife, were both charged with two felonies of child neglect. According to WTHR, the officer was also put on leave.

When it was just eighteen degrees outdoors on January 19, a witness saw the girl holding the placard outside and dialed 911.

“I want to stab and Kill my brother — I even take an antipsychotic — If you need to give pity — then give it to the victims,” the sign stated.

However, Scott and his supervisor arrived at the site and spoke with the worried witness.

The caller told Scott, “This baby is standing out here in the freezing cold with a sign,” according to body camera footage.

Scott defended his behavior even though he acknowledged that he was to blame for the girl’s treatment.

“Yup, she comes out here every 30 minutes, and she goes back inside every 10 minutes to warm back up,” he replied.

An “older male” pulled up as they were talking and said he was worried about the girl too, asking Scott why she had to remain outside with the frightening sign.

“Well sir, aside from me cruelly beating her physically, I’ve not done any other punishment that has worked for her,” Scott stated.

“She’s threatened to kill my family, she wants to embarrass us, she wants to urinate on herself and destroy things in the house. I have a [Department of Child Services] caseworker involved, she’s been in therapy for three years, she also has the wrap-around program at school,” he continued.

The 911 caller was informed by Scott that his daughter had been hospitalized twice but had been “kicked out.”

Scott informed the caller, “I threatened to not pick her up,” but he gave in after being told that failing to pick her up would result in a notification of abandonment to the Department of Child Services.

Investigators were subsequently informed by Scott’s wife that their daughter was made to carry the sign because she pouted when told she was not allowed to use lip gloss.

However, the girl had previously been asked to hold a sign.

One instance, according to the girl’s caseworker, involved her parents forcing her to bring a placard to school that read, “I pee on everything and cover it up like a cat.” Additionally, according to her school, she was made to carry a placard at Walmart that said, “I lie to hurt other people.”

According to an investigator, the girl’s parents’ admission that she had behavioral issues that call for medication seemed to be an attempt to defend their behavior. However, the investigator warned that this acknowledgment would worsen the accused crime.

The Logansport Board of Public Works decided on Wednesday to put Scott on unpaid leave while the inquiry was underway.

According to the Logansport Police Chief, “within hours” after the January incident, they placed Scott on leave and turned over the case to the Indiana State Police.
