After a mother and stepfather were jailed for allegedly neglecting to pick up their 13-year-old daughter from the hospital, a tragic case of neglect in Indiana left many indignant. Before she and her husband became inebriated and passed out, leaving the teen stranded, the mother allegedly told a social worker that she was not dealing with this tonight.

According to court filings, the 36-year-old mother, Amanda D. Osmon, and the 41-year-old stepfather, Jeffrey Scheda, were taken into custody and accused of neglecting a dependent. About 165 miles southwest of Indianapolis, at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Hospital, the incident took place over the weekend.

Hospital Visit Turns Into Disturbing Family Drama

Following a fight with her mother on Saturday afternoon, the adolescent had gone to the hospital by herself. When it came time for her to be discharged, things took a concerning turn after she was committed for a mental health evaluation.

Multiple attempted attempts were made by hospital staff to reach Osmon, who at first refused to answer their phones. A hospital social worker was able to get in touch with Scheda at approximately 7 p.m. Scheda allegedly hung up when asked to have Osmon call back, refusing to cooperate.

The teenager remained waiting at the hospital for several more hours. The social worker finally called Osmon at around ten o’clock at night.

Osmon reportedly lost his temper during the call and quarreled about who should pick up the youngster. Osmon abruptly ended the call by saying, “I’m not dealing with this tonight,” and then hanging up.

During the call, Osmon sounded drunk, according to the social worker who informed the police.

Parents Admit to Drinking and Passing Out

The situation worsened during the early hours of Sunday morning.

To resolve the situation, Evansville Police Department officers paid a visit to the parents’ residence. Both Osmon and Scheda acknowledged to drinking excessively and fainting while their daughter was still in the hospital, according to the police.

Osmon tried to defend her behavior by saying the teenager had bitten her during a previous argument. Additionally, she claimed that the hospital did not get in touch with her until Sunday at 2:52 a.m.

She was unable to back up these assertions with any proof, though.

Legal Consequences and Court Proceedings

Following their arrest and transfer to the Vanderburgh County Jail, Osmon and Scheda were eventually freed upon each posting a $1,500 bond.

They must refrain from drinking alcohol and refrain from contacting the adolescent unless the Department of Child Services gives permission as part of their discharge.

On January 29, the couple is expected to show up for their initial court appearances.
