New Jersey’s Manhattan. The season’s first seal rescue occurred Monday when a juvenile female harbor seal was discovered wounded and underweight on a Mantoloking beach.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) reports that the roughly two-year-old seal was found with an injured left eye, abrasions on her right rear flipper, and edema in her left rear flipper. She weighed 80 pounds when she was rescued, and she was taken to MMSC for supportive care and medical attention.
The seal was given fluids and wound treatment when it arrived. After doing a thorough medical assessment that included blood tests, the center’s veterinarian started giving antibiotic eye drops and oral drugs to prevent infections.
According to MMSC’s statement on Monday, she is currently resting nicely in Pen 1 of the Pool House while being assisted by the Stranding Technicians.
Born in the spring of 2023, the seal is anticipated to stay in the custody of MMSC personnel until her health improves and she is ready to be returned to the wild.
