Jackson Police Chief Named in Gender Discrimination and Harassment Claim

Jackson, New Jersey. According to a letter her attorney sent to the township and police department this week, a female Jackson Township police officer is accusing the Jackson Police Department, led by Chief Matthew Kukz, of sexual harassment and gender discrimination. She is seeking a settlement to address her claims.

According to the correspondence written by her lawyer, Michael E. Riley, the officer, who has been with the Jackson Township Police Department for more than 19 years, claims she was consistently passed over for promotions and specialized training opportunities that were given to less experienced male coworkers. In addition, the letter alleges that she experienced inappropriate verbal and written statements as well as sexual harassment from other police. She says that Chief Kunz failed to respond appropriately to her issues and concerns.

Riley said the experienced officer applied for and was turned down for positions in the traffic unit, school resource officer, and detective departments.

Riley noted in the letter that when she questioned the decisions, police department management instructed her to just do more. Riley also claimed that male officers who were junior to [her] were sent to the jobs with little to no training.

If the letter is not answered by January 30th, Iley threatened to bring a lawsuit alleging violations of the New Jersey Civil Rights Act and discriminatory statutes.

The lawyer has not yet disclosed any additional information or supporting documentation on the alleged harassment.
