Jewelry retailer ordered to reopen refund portal for servicemembers misled by illegal practices

Pennsylvania’s Harrisburg. In order to give customers another opportunity to pursue claims for millions of dollars owed under a settlement agreement, a federal court has ordered Harris Jewelry, a national retailer accused of misleading servicemembers with its sales tactics, to reopen its refund claims portal.

The court’s ruling follows Harris Jewelry’s early termination of the claims procedure, which was against a deal requiring the business to reimburse impacted clients and stop collecting debt. As part of a $10.9 million settlement, Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry announced that the claims process has been reopened and will remain open until December 21, 2024.

In 2022, Harris Jewelry was first sued by the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general from 18 states, including Pennsylvania. According to the lawsuit, the New York-based business deceitfully claimed that jewelry sales would raise service members’ credit scores in order to market the product to them. Additionally, the corporation violated federal consumer protection regulations, such as the Military Lending Act, by adding expensive protection plans to transactions without approval.

According to Attorney General Henry, Harris was solely interested in making money for themselves, even though the corporation presented itself as a fervent supporter of our armed forces. I’m encouraging those Pennsylvanians who qualify for this relief to act quickly since there isn’t much time left to submit applications.

Over $8 million is still available in the refund pool, and the FTC estimates that 32,000 consumers nationwide were impacted by Harris Jewelry’s actions. As part of the court decision, Harris Jewelry, which operated close to military installations and used the tagline “Serving those who serve,” has been ordered to close and dissolve.
