On Wednesday, illegal Venezuelan immigrant Jose Ibarra was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.
Judge H. Patrick Haggard of the Athens-Clarke County Superior Court sentenced Ibarra to life in prison without the chance of release on Wednesday. Following the completion of the illegal immigrant’s multi-day murder trial, the court earlier in the day found him guilty on all counts on Wednesday.
Riley’s relatives testified at the sentence, including her father, mother, and other loved ones who made painful remarks about Riley’s life and the pain of never seeing her again. Ibarra was given life in prison without the possibility of release, as requested by the prosecution and his family.
During a sad speech, Riley’s sister said, “I now have to deal with the fact and burden that my sister will never come home again.” She also urged the judge to impose a severe sentence on Ibarra. That man is the height of depravity and utterly horrible.
Riley’s father said, “I will try to deal with this grief for the rest of my life.” In addition to the fact that I am her father, I also believe that she deserves justice, thus I will work to preserve her memory.
Ibarra’s DNA was discovered beneath Riley’s fingernails by law enforcement investigators looking into the murder. This evidence connected Ibarra to the crime and clearly showed that Riley resisted when he attempted to rape her and eventually killed her. Ibarra had entered a not guilty plea, and his lawyers had tried to argue that the evidence against him was circumstantial and that Riley’s ruthless murder may have been committed by his brother Diego, who shares a lot of his DNA.
Aggravated assault with intent to rape, aggravated violence, malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, delaying or hindering a 9-1-1 call, tampering with evidence, and being a peeping tom were among the charges Haggard imposed on Ibarra Thursday.
A murder case that generated a national discussion about the effects of widespread illegal immigration to the United States has some resolution now that the verdict and punishment have been handed down.
Shortly after Riley’s body was found along a running route close to the University of Georgia campus in February, Ibarra—who had a criminal history prior to the murder—was taken into custody. After breaking into El Paso, Texas, illegally in September 2022 and being released on parole, he was residing in Athens, Georgia.
Earlier in the trial, Ibarra’s roommate testified that she and Ibarra had been residing in New York City, but that prior to Riley’s murder, she had successfully applied for a humanitarian trip to Georgia.
