L.A. Moves to Join Lawsuit Against Trump Administration’s Immigration Raids

In an effort to stop the Trump administration’s massive immigration raids that have sparked protests and created anxiety in Latino communities throughout Southern California, Los Angeles city and county authorities attempted to join a federal lawsuit against the administration on Tuesday.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and other organizations filed the lawsuit last week, accusing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies of racial profiling, making warrantless arrests, denying people access to attorneys, and detaining people in substandard conditions.

On Tuesday, nine municipalities, including the City and County of Los Angeles, filed a move to intervene in the case. Culver City, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood were the other locations, all of which were in Los Angeles County.

At a press conference, Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto stated that these unlawful raids and roundups could not go on. They can’t take over as the new standard.

Local leaders had been calling for the raids to stop for weeks, but their formal attempt to stop a federal operation began when they asked to be included in the lawsuit. The request was made the day after National Guard soldiers and heavily armed federal agents stormed through MacArthur Park near downtown Los Angeles in a spectacular display of force that prompted Mayor Karen Bass to chastise them.

The mayor, who attended the news conference on Tuesday, stated that the city did not need federal officers showing there, lining up in a militaristic manner, and doing nothing at all.
