UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa.
— A 59-year-old Latrobe man is in custody following a shooting that injured his 80-year-old mother and led to a prolonged police standoff in Unity Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.
David Rebar was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person after the incident, which occurred on May 24 in the 5200 block of Center Drive.
Troopers responded to the home after receiving a report of a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her arm. The victim, Rebar’s mother, was able to escape the home and seek help from a neighbor. She informed police that her son had shot her inside their shared residence.
As troopers arrived, they heard gunfire coming from the house and requested assistance from the State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT).
Standoff ends with peaceful surrender
After several hours of negotiations, Rebar surrendered to authorities without further incident. He was found in possession of a pistol at the time of his arrest.
The victim continues to receive medical treatment and is expected to survive, officials said. Rebar was remanded to the Westmoreland County Prison after being denied bail.
