LINDEN, N.J. — Linden police responded quickly to a 9-1-1 call Wednesday morning about a man with a rifle between East Elizabeth Avenue and North Park Avenue, which resulted in a precautionary lockdown of surrounding schools.
When officers arrived on the scene at approximately 7:50 a.m., they conducted a thorough search and found that the person in question was unarmed. At around 9:15 a.m., the lockdown—which was implemented to protect the staff and students—was removed.
According to Linden Police Chief David Hart, “nothing is more precious than our children, and we take any potential threat to their safety very seriously.” For their assistance throughout the incident, he thanked Linden Public Schools, the Elizabeth Police Department, and nearby parents.
Parents were reassured by Linden Public Schools, which are set to dismiss early today, that safety procedures were observed. To further reassure the community, police have also stepped up their presence around schools.
Chief Hart stressed the value of being vigilant and reporting suspicious activities, especially as the holiday season approaches, even though the allegation was baseless.
