EUNICE, LA

– A Louisiana mother is facing legal trouble after a puzzling call to police about her son’s supposed kidnapping took an unexpected twist. Early on November 5, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from Artasia Quantaya Viges, who claimed that her young son had been abducted by suspects in a truck along U.S. 190 in Eunice. But soon after deputies arrived, a different story began to unfold, one involving accusations from the son himself.

The Alleged Kidnapping Claim

Artasia Quantaya Viges, the mother, reported that her son had been abducted by people in an older model truck after she pulled over due to a deflated tire. According to her statement to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, the truck’s occupants kidnapped the child while she was checking the tire on the side of the road.

But when deputies located the child at the Heinen Medical Clinic parking lot shortly after the report, they discovered the story didn’t add up. The boy, found with scraped knees, told officers his mother had “run him over” and left him on the roadside.

Investigating a Strange Turn of Events

The sheriff’s office quickly brought in juvenile detectives to investigate what had happened. According to an official statement, an interview with Viges “revealed the awful truth.” Authorities say the events unfolded after a disagreement between Viges and her son led to an escalating situation.

“What started as a disagreement between a mother and a child became a bizarre reaction to the child having a tantrum,” the sheriff’s office noted.

Detectives shared that Viges allegedly pulled over, at which point the boy, who was reportedly not properly restrained in the car, exited before the vehicle had fully stopped, leading to his injuries. According to investigators, Viges then made the decision to leave him there, allowing him to run off in the dark alongside a major road.

Charges Filed and Investigation Ongoing

In her alleged confession, Viges admitted to deputies that she did not attempt to retrieve her son after he left the car, even losing sight of him in the process. She now faces multiple charges, including cruelty to juveniles, child desertion, and false swearing for the purpose of violating public health or safety.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the investigation is still ongoing. They are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward, noting that anonymous tips are also welcome as they seek to piece together all aspects of the case.
