The majority of the 66 locations that Macy’s intends to close will be shut down during the first three months of 2025, according to a list that was issued by the company at the beginning of this year.
With the implementation of this strategy, Macy’s intends “to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”
This strategy was introduced in February of the previous year as part of the retailer’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy.
“Closing any store is never easy,” Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc. states in a press release. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”
By 2026, Macy’s plans to close about 150 of its “underproductive” sites nationwide, the company has announced. This action is a component of a broader plan to optimize its business processes and concentrate on a more effective retail presence.
To increase its presence in regions with higher sales potential, the corporation is also investing heavily in about 350 “go-forward” outlets.
This change underscores Macy’s larger strategy to adjust to the changing retail environment, as customers’ shopping preferences are shifting more and more toward online channels while certain in-store locations are still having difficulties.
The Macy’s shop located at 397 Greece Ridge Center in Rochester, New York, is one of the most notable closures. In the most recent wave of closures, this site is one of nine Macy’s stores in the state of New York that will close.
April 11, 2025, is the last day the store will be accessible to the general public. Given that some 50 people are anticipated to lose their jobs as a result of the closure, it represents the emotional conclusion of a lengthy chapter for the staff.
These employees will surely be affected by this huge loss, as will the devoted patrons who have been shopping there for years.

Nonetheless, customers will be able to benefit from liquidation deals if they visit the Macy’s store in the upcoming months. Prior to its permanent closure, the store will be giving steep discounts as it gets rid of its inventory.
This offers a unique chance for bargain hunters to buy products at a substantial discount. Even while the closing is painful, bargain hunters may view it as a bittersweet opportunity. However, for the staff and patrons who have long depended on the recognizable Macy’s store, the closure signifies the end of an era.
