MANHATTAN, N.Y.—Earlier this week, a Bronx man was taken into custody by police in relation to the theft of a gold-plated metal rose from the 9/11 Memorial at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Midtown.
Authorities reported that an unidentified person broke into the church at 135 West 31st Street at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, and took the symbolic rose without authorization. The rose is a component of the church’s memorial for the September 11 attacks victims.
On Friday night at 8 p.m., Deikel Alcantara, 21, of 3535 Dekalb Avenue in the Bronx, was taken into custody by the NYPD within the 14th Precinct. In relation to the event, authorities accused Alcantara of third-degree grand larceny.
Although authorities have not provided any additional information on the recovery of the stolen rose, media footage that was made public earlier this week helped to support the investigation into the theft.
