Man charged in alleged hate-motivated assault on H Street in D.C.

Washington, D.C. A 44-year-old man was arrested following an assault on New Year’s Day in the 800 block of H Street. Police are looking into the incident as a potential hate crime.

At approximately 11:25 p.m., the suspect—who has been named as Shawn Radford—allegedly went up to the victim and asked for a cigarette. Radford allegedly used racial epithets in response to the victim’s claim that he didn’t have one, then attacked the victim and left the scene.

Radford was later found and taken into custody by officers who accused him of simple assault and threatening bodily harm. The investigation into the assault for possible hate or bias motives has been verified by the Metropolitan Police Department.
