Man critically injured, dog killed in Jersey Shore hit-and-run; driver arrested

ABSECON, New Jersey. According to authorities, a 25-year-old man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning in Absecon, and his dog was killed.

Absecon resident Syed Hoque and his dog were hit by a car at the crossroads of Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue just after midnight. His dog passed away at the scene, and Hoque was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

After cops found a car that fit the description given by a passing motorist who contacted 911, the driver was captured after he had fled. Byron A. Jones, 52, of Mays Landing, was taken into custody by police after a car stop.

The Absecon Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, working with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, is still investigating the collision. Authorities urge the public to get in touch with them as they are looking for further witnesses or information about the incident.

For around four hours, local traffic was halted as police worked on their investigation.
