Connecticut’s Stamford. The Stamford Fire Department reports that a 30-year-old man was saved Friday evening after his sailboat overturned in the Long Island Sound approximately three-quarters of a mile off Shippan Point.
Beachgoers at the Woodway Beach Club, 95 Hobson Street, reported a small sailboat capsized in choppy waves to Stamford 911 at approximately 8:30 p.m.
The man was pushed into the ocean while alone in a 12-foot 9-inch Zuma sailboat, but he was able to right the boat and get back in. The sail stayed down, leaving the boat adrift in gusts of 11 to 14 mph and seas of around two feet.
Rescue crews from EMS, Stamford Police, and Stamford Fire were sent out. Marine forces were directed to the man’s location by shore-based command staff at the beach club.
At 8:52 p.m., a Stamford Police boat arrived with the conscious victim, and by 9:03 p.m., it had taken him to the West Beach boat ramp, where EMS and fire personnel took over.
After exposure, the victim received treatment for hypothermia.
Responders reported that the air temperature was 67 degrees with a constant wind and the water temperature was approximately 73 degrees, all of which aided in the development of hypothermia.
After providing on-scene treatment, Stamford EMS sent the guy to Stamford Hospital for additional monitoring.
The sailboat was retrieved and towed to land at the West Beach boat launch by a Stamford Fireboat in the meantime.
After struggling with wind and waves, a lone sailor’s boat capsized close to Shippan Point on Friday, and he was rescued from the Sound.
