On Sunday afternoon, while he was chatting with his girlfriend on a sidewalk in the Bronx, a 24-year-old man was allegedly struck on the head with a hammer.
The victim was attacked across the street from 1445 Nelson Ave. in the Highbridge neighborhood at about 12:45 p.m. by a suspect brandishing a tool, according to the police.
Minutes after the incident, medics arrived on the scene to treat the wounded person.
Photos taken at the site showed that he was wearing a gauze bandage that extended from his forehead to his chin, and that blood was oozing out of the back of his skull.
The victim, who was shirtless, lied down on an article of clothing at one point so that first responders could treat her.
On the way to Saint Barnabas, his condition was stabilized.
According to the authorities, the assailant ran away on foot after the attack and is still at large.
No more details regarding the hammer attack, such as its possible motivation, were immediately available.
