In October, Carl Jenkins, 61, of East 30th Street, entered a guilty plea to charges of second-degree assault and failing to report an incident. Justice Shari Michaels of the Bronx Supreme Court sentenced him to seven years in jail and five years of post-release supervision on Tuesday.

Jenkins stole a 2002 Mitsubishi flatbed truck that was parked outside a timber yard on White Plains Road on April 22, 2022. Jenkins was seen driving dangerously down White Plains Road after getting into the truck, which had been left with the keys inside, according to surveillance footage.

Before escaping the scene, Jenkins hit a 49-year-old man and crushed him against another car. A punctured lung, several fractured bones, internal bleeding, broken teeth, and two amputated fingers were among the victim’s numerous injuries. His forearm and ribs were repaired surgically with titanium plates and screws.

District Attorney Clark stated that the defendant’s careless acts had now resulted in a significant jail sentence, emphasizing the incident’s long-term suffering and incapacity.
