SAN DIEGO, CA

– A man tragically lost his life last week while attempting to scale the U.S.-Mexico border barrier near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego. The incident, reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), underscores the deadly risks some individuals face while trying to cross into the United States.

This tragic loss highlights the human toll of border crossings, regardless of legality. As we reflect on this event, may we pray for the soul of the man who lost his life and for peace for his grieving family.

Though his actions broke the law, his dignity and the pain of those left behind remain deeply important. In times of sorrow, we find solace in the words of Matthew 5:4:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

May his loved ones find strength in this difficult time.

Attempted Crossing Ends in Tragedy

The events unfolded early on Nov. 8, when a National Guardsman monitoring border surveillance spotted a group of individuals scaling the barrier near Otay Mesa, about a quarter-mile west of the port of entry. At 5:42 a.m., the Guardsman reported the activity, prompting an immediate response from a CBP agent.

Arriving on the scene just two minutes later, the agent observed two men atop the northern barrier. As the men began descending, one of them—a Colombian citizen—fell from the approximately 30-foot-tall secondary barrier. He landed on the north side of the border, where the agent found him conscious but clearly injured.

Emergency Response Delays

The CBP agent quickly called for emergency medical services at 5:45 a.m. and removed the ladder used by the group to climb the barrier. To access the injured man’s location, the agent drove to a nearby gate. By 6:03 a.m., a San Diego Fire Department truck arrived, but personnel were delayed further as they waited for an escort to the site.

The man’s condition deteriorated rapidly. At around 6:15 a.m., he became unresponsive. Emergency medical services reached him at 6:22 a.m., but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m. at the scene.

Group Members Disperse

While the injured man awaited medical assistance, the other individuals in the group attempted to evade authorities. One man fled north on foot and was later apprehended by border agents. Surveillance footage showed that three others escaped north of the barrier, while one returned to Mexico.

The identity of the deceased Colombian man has not been released as officials work to notify his family. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has not provided additional information about the motivations of the group involved.
