Maryland Attorney General investigates fatal police shooting in West Baltimore

Baltimore, Maryland Officials said that the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is looking into a shooting death that happened in West Baltimore on Tuesday night.

A preliminary investigation states that the event happened on June 17 at approximately 7:15 p.m. close to the intersection of Laurens Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. A man holding a crossbody bag was approached by Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers in an unmarked cruiser. The man started to leave when one of the officers got out of the car and came up on foot.

The man moved the bag from his back to his front and ran away as the officer pursued. A third police in a marked car nearby also responded on foot, and a second officer got out of the cruiser to help.

A gun was fired as the first cop tried to arrest the suspect. Three cops returned fire when the suspect pointed a weapon at them while the other officers sought cover. A firearm was found at the site after the man was hit by gunshots.

Officers, crowd delayed medical aid after shooting

According to authorities, a crowd gathered around the area at first, making it impossible for officers to provide assistance. Officers provided first assistance until EMS came after the scene was secured. After being taken to a neighboring hospital, the man was declared deceased.

A lower body bullet wound was also sustained by one of the officers. He is receiving care at a nearby hospital.

The inquiry, which is required by Maryland law for all police-involved fatalities, is being led by the IID. The footage will be made public in compliance with BPD and IID rules, and the officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras.
