Maryland man wins big after lucky penny lands in his shoe

FREDERICK, MD — Charles Reed of Frederick has struck it big again, winning a $50,000 top prize on a Ca$h Plu$ scratch-off, thanks to a unique good-luck ritual involving a heads-up penny.

After finding the penny, Reed placed it in his shoe as a charm—a tradition suggested by a friend. With the penny in place, he bought his winning ticket at the High’s store on Old National Pike in New Market, leading to his second major Maryland Lottery prize. Last year, he won $100,000 on a Ravens scratch-off from the same retailer.

This time, Reed plans to use his prize money to buy a new car for his wife. The High’s store that sold the winning ticket will also receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for the sale.
