PHARR, TX

– In a surprising twist on a routine produce shipment, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents seized over $31 million worth of methamphetamine concealed within a load of serrano peppers at the Texas border. The significant drug discovery marks one of the latest attempts to smuggle large amounts of narcotics into the United States, reflecting the evolving tactics used by smugglers.

Serrano Peppers Conceal Over 2,000 Pounds of Methamphetamine

On November 10, 2024, CBP officers stationed at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility encountered a tractor-trailer arriving from Mexico with a manifest labeling the shipment as serrano peppers. Using a combination of non-intrusive inspection technology and physical checks, officers selected the truck for a closer inspection.

Their efforts revealed a startling discovery: within the pepper shipment were 1,859 packages of alleged methamphetamine, totaling more than 2,155 pounds. According to CBP, the confiscated drugs carry an estimated street value of $31,169,000. Following the discovery, the methamphetamine and the vehicle were immediately seized.

Criminal Investigation Underway by Homeland Security

With the massive haul of narcotics safely in custody, Homeland Security Investigations special agents have now launched a criminal investigation into the incident. The seizure underscores the serious, ongoing challenges facing CBP as smugglers attempt to exploit various methods to evade detection.

“Our CBP officers continue to remain vigilant and intercepted this massive methamphetamine load, preventing it from reaching American streets,” stated Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.

As CBP officers work to protect communities from the dangers of drug trafficking, each interception serves as a reminder of the innovative and persistent efforts by traffickers to move illegal substances across the border. But with dedication and diligence, the CBP continues to intercept these dangerous shipments, keeping millions of dollars’ worth of drugs from reaching U.S. streets.
