Newark, New Jersey.This week, the Archdiocese of Newark’s Mercy House distributed a record 650 turkeys at its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway in Newark, Elizabeth, and Jersey City, bringing Thanksgiving cheer to hundreds of families in need.
Overcoming last year’s total of 540 turkeys, the three-day event, which took place from November 19 to 21, demonstrated the initiative’s expanding reach. In addition to turkeys, families were given bags containing mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, so they could have a full Thanksgiving meal.
“It’s only fitting that The Mercy House helps our clients celebrate a holiday that honors both love and family, which are hallmarks of the Catholic Church,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. Thanks to the kindness of our supporters and the hard work of our employees and volunteers, we were able to make more people happy this year than ever before.
About 250 of the turkeys were distributed in Newark, and 200 each were distributed in Elizabeth and Jersey City. Volunteers put forth a lot of effort to make sure families had all they needed for a cozy and joyous Thanksgiving celebration.
Now that Thanksgiving is over, Mercy House is getting ready for its yearly Christmas Gift Giveaway, which will take place in Newark on December 17, Elizabeth on December 18, and Jersey City on December 23. Children from birth to age 17 will receive toys, clothes, and other presents from the program. To help make the celebration a success, donations of brand-new, unwrapped toys, apparel, gift cards, and wrapping materials are being requested.
