Mexican national sentenced to 20 years for illegal reentry after aggravated felony

Miss Jackson. U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee said Thursday that a Mexican national who had previously been convicted of an egregious felony and deported had been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for unlawfully reentering the country.

After a traffic stop on February 21, 2024, Luis Javier Sanchez-Zurita, 38, of Oaxaca, Mexico, was found in Brandon, Mississippi. A Brandon Police officer arrested Sanchez-Zurita for reckless driving, driving under the influence, and endangering a child, according to court documents.

According to authorities, Sanchez-Zurita was deported in 2017 after being found guilty of indulgence of lust, a state felony including offenses against children. On August 22, 2024, he entered a guilty plea to the charge of unauthorized entrance following deportation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations looked into the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Glenda R. Haynes handled the prosecution.

The gravity of reintegration following deportation was underlined by officials, especially when it is connected to violent felony convictions in the past.
