Troy Mitteness, 57, of Burnsville, has been charged by a grand jury in Dakota County, Minnesota, with premeditated first-degree murder in relation to the death of his mother, Sandra Viola Mitteness. The charge, which carries the potential of life in jail without the chance of parole if Mitteness is found guilty, comes after a vicious crime was discovered that outraged the town.
Murder and Dismemberment Details
In July 2023, Mitteness was charged with second-degree deliberate murder; however, the charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder due to the grand jury’s indictment. The murder occurred at Mitteness’ house on Riverwood Drive on June 2, 2022, according to court records. He allegedly stabbed his 82-year-old mother in her bed with a big kitchen knife.
Unsettling information regarding Mitteness’s pre- and post-murder behavior is revealed in the criminal complaint. His mother apparently became suspicious of his actions when he told authorities that he had been squandering all of her money. Mitteness looked up ways to kill an elderly person without using poison online in an attempt to evade detection. In order to make sure that someone would die quickly and painlessly, he carefully researched the finest places to stab them.
The Aftermath: Body Disposal
According to reports, Mitteness dissected his mother’s body after the murder and put her pieces in big plastic tote bins in his garage. Then, as he traveled from Burnsville to Appleton, Wisconsin, he dumped the remains into road ditches from his moving vehicle.
After first trying to hide the murder, Mitteness eventually confessed to it when he spoke with Burnsville police.
Mitteness faces a life sentence without the chance of release if found guilty of first-degree murder. The case has not yet been scheduled for a court hearing.
Her family and friends are very saddened by the tragic death of Sandra Viola Mitteness, an 82-year-old mother whose life was cut short by unspeakable brutality.
Even though we cannot completely understand the suffering her loved ones are going through, we are reminded of Romans 12:15, which states, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”As the community struggles with the sorrow and suffering caused by such a terrible incident, may this verse provide solace. We pray those impacted find strength and healing during this trying time, and our thoughts are with them.
