Montgomery County task force arrests 73 impaired drivers during holiday crackdown




The city of Gathersburg, Maryland Since beginning its seasonal enforcement operation on November 20, 2024, the Montgomery County Police Holiday Alcohol Task Force has taken 73 intoxicated drivers into custody, officials said Friday.

Three major instances over the weekend of November 30 and December 1 resulted in three arrests for driving under the influence, according to the task force, which is tasked with minimizing impaired driving throughout the holiday season.

At at 12:09 a.m. on Saturday, police in Gaithersburg pulled over a 34-year-old woman close to South Summit Avenue and East Diamond Avenue. She was arrested after failing field sobriety tests, and a loaded Smith & Wesson Equalizer M&P handgun was found in her bag. She faces both DUI and firearm-related charges because the gun was seized because she was driving while intoxicated, even though she had a valid concealed carry certificate in Maryland.

Officers arrived at a car stopped at a blinking yellow light on Cherry Hill Road at Prosperity Drive in Calverton a few minutes later, at 12:32 a.m. on Sunday. A 48-year-old guy who was found to be intoxicated was arrested after the car swerved rearward into a police cruiser. He has been charged with DUI and traffic.

Officers were called to a collision near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Randolph Road in Wheaton later on Sunday night at around 8:28 p.m. It was discovered that a male motorist, 17, was intoxicated when he ran a red light and struck another car. Minor injuries were received by passengers in the hit vehicle. After being charged with DUI, the teenager was given back to his parents.
