Morning traffic slows across New Jersey with flooding, crashes, and delays

Trenton, New Jersey. Commuters in New Jersey had a difficult morning as major roads across the state saw extensive delays due to collisions, flooding, and heavy traffic. Travel times for thousands of people were impacted by bottlenecks on highways, tunnels, and bridges caused by significant incidents and volume-related congestion.

Near CR 29/Atlantic Avenue, flooding on NJ 36 in Long Branch has forced traffic to detour and closed all lanes in both directions. As of 7:20 a.m., the area is still under water, so drivers are urged to use caution. Delays were exacerbated by collisions on major thoroughfares, such as the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. One southbound lane was stopped on the Parkway due to a collision near Exit 132 in Woodbridge Township, and an eastbound center lane was blocked at the Turnpike’s Hudson County Extension near Interchange 14 in Newark.

An eastbound crash west of Exit 54 in Hillside Township caused local lanes on I-78 to be disrupted, blocking one left lane. Significant delays and partial closures were also brought on by overturned tractor trucks on I-80 eastbound near Exit 34 in Rockaway Township and on I-287 northbound near Exit 44 in Boonton.

There was also significant congestion at the bridge and tunnel crossings into New York City. Both the upper and lower sections of the George Washington Bridge took around 45 minutes to traverse. Similar delays were recorded by the Lincoln Tunnel, which took 40 minutes to drive east from New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E to the New York side.

Volume-related delays extended throughout the Garden State Parkway, resulting in an 8.5-mile congestion heading north from Irvington Township to Bloomfield. Slowdowns were also seen on the Turnpike’s Western Spur, with a 2-mile northbound delay close to Interchange 15W.

As road conditions change throughout the morning, drivers are urged to follow traffic reports and make plans for alternate routes.
