Washington, D.C.The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit opened an inquiry after a man was died in a crash in Northwest D.C. early on Saturday morning that involved a commander who was on duty.
Around 4:18 a.m., an unmarked 2017 Ford Explorer MPD cruiser operating west on a green light entered the intersection at 13th Street, causing an accident in the 1200 block of Columbia Road, Northwest. A 2023 Yamaha XT250 motorcycle that was heading north at a high speed approached the intersection against a red light at the same moment and collided with the cruiser’s driver’s side.
The motorbike operator was ejected by the crash and was declared dead at the site after emergency personnel failed to revive him. Unharmed, the MPD commander in charge of the cruiser promptly requested help. The identity of the deceased rider is being sought by detectives.
According to department rules, the MPD member who was not answering a call and did not have the car’s emergency lights on at the time has been placed on administrative leave. Because the commander was driving an unmarked car, the incident was not captured on a body-worn camera.
Police are urging anyone with information on the crash to call the Major Crash Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division at (202) 727-9099 or text at 50411.
