Motorcyclist shoots hammer-wielding driver in fatal Glen Burnie road rage clash

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — A road rage incident in Glen Burnie escalated into fatal violence Saturday night, when a motorcyclist shot and killed a driver who allegedly confronted him with a hammer, Anne Arundel County police said.

The altercation began around 8:20 p.m. near Maryland Route 10 and Furnace Branch Road. Police say the motorcyclist, a 22-year-old man, noticed he was being tailgated and harassed by a car driving erratically. The driver, identified as 51-year-old Scott David Guhse of Glen Burnie, reportedly pulled alongside the motorcyclist, yelling aggressively.

The confrontation came to a head when both vehicles stopped on East Furnace Branch Road at Margate Drive. According to police, Guhse exited his vehicle and advanced toward the motorcyclist, wielding a hammer. Feeling threatened, the motorcyclist drew his legally carried handgun and fired, fatally wounding Guhse, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy confirmed the motorcyclist remained on the scene and cooperated with officers. “At a certain point, he was sort of forced off the road and had to lay down his bike,” Mulcahy explained. “The individual was coming toward him with a hammer, and he responded with gunfire.”

Nearby business owner Hyung Chang, who heard the gunshot, described the moment police arrived. “I heard a pop — I thought it sounded like gunfire,” Chang said. “Ten to 15 minutes later, police and everything started showing up.”
