Mountain Ridge High School band director indicted on sex abuse charges

Frostburg, After looking into claims of inappropriate behavior with a student, an Allegany County Grand Jury indicted Md. Derek Lindon Shank, 43, the band director at Mountain Ridge High School, authorities said.

The Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigations Unit (C3I) and the Frostburg Police Department received an anonymous complaint about Shank’s alleged actions, which prompted the start of the inquiry on March 6, 2025. As part of the investigation, investigators conducted several interviews and carried out numerous search and seizure orders.

After examining the results, the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office brought the matter before the grand jury, which issued an indictment accusing Shank of one count each of attempted fourth-degree sex offense, second-degree assault, and sexual abuse of a minor.

Shank is awaiting judicial hearings after being served with charges.

On Monday, June 23, Shank, a LaVale resident, was formally served with the charges. He is currently awaiting court procedures in Allegany County’s Circuit Court.

Since the lawsuit is still pending, no more information has been made public.
