CHERRY HILL, N.J. — Two individuals magnet fishing in the Cooper River on Saturday afternoon pulled up what appeared to be an old military-style projectile, prompting a rapid response from local authorities to secure the area.
The discovery was made around 12:30 p.m. near the Cuthbert Boulevard bridge, according to the Cherry Hill Police Department. The magnet fishers, using a high-powered magnet, retrieved an object that resembled military ordnance and immediately contacted police. Officers quickly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
The Camden County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad Unit was dispatched to the scene. The team examined the ordnance, which showed signs of having been submerged for a long period, and safely transported it from the area. Authorities have not specified the exact type of ordnance but indicated that further assessment would determine a method for its controlled disposal.
The secured area was reopened to the public at approximately 4:00 p.m. after the scene was declared safe.
In light of the incident, the Cherry Hill Police Department reminded residents to report any suspicious or potentially hazardous items. Tips can be provided by calling (856) 488-7828, emailing [email protected], or by texting TIP CHERRYHILLPD followed by a message to 888777.
