EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ On Thursday, a man allegedly set fire to his room after a furious argument with staff, and then attacked an employee as he ran away, causing a chaotic scene at a hotel in New Jersey. Thankfully, there were no casualties despite the substantial damage inflicted by the fire.
The Incident
The Fairfield Inn called the East Rutherford Police Department and East Rutherford Fire Department at around 11:24 a.m. on Thursday to report that a visitor had purposefully set fire to his hotel room.
Authorities found that Vincente Carabello, 55, the suspect, had already left the area when they arrived.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire and removed the visitors. Although there were no reports of injuries from the fire itself, the fire activated the building’s sprinkler system, resulting in extensive water damage throughout the hotel.
Investigation and Charges
Following the event, a joint investigation into the fire was started by law enforcement officials, including detectives from the East Rutherford Police Department and arson investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. According to their conclusions, following a disagreement with hotel employees, Carabello purposefully started the fire.
Authorities acknowledged as part of the inquiry that the hotel sustained severe damage from the incident.
As he left the scene, Carabello is also accused of assaulting a staff member, who was not gravely hurt. Carabello is currently facing a number of accusations, including assault, criminal mischief, aggravated arson, and risk of causing extensive harm or damage.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
After some time, Carabello was apprehended and placed under arrest. He is currently awaiting his initial appearance in Bergen County Superior Court after being remanded to the Bergen County Jail.
As the case progresses through the judicial system, authorities are still looking into the full amount of the damage caused by the sprinkler system and fire.
