After receiving reports of the fire, which was promptly put out but left investigators questioning its cause, troopers arrived on the scene at around 4:39 p.m. The public is being asked to help authorities figure out what started the fire, and they are especially interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the fire or noticed strange activity close to the monument.
The 40-foot-tall steel sculpture known as the Hainesport Steel Mast, or Big Rusty monument, was built in 1975 as a memorial to the region’s industrial past. The monument is a local landmark and a representation of the township’s history, situated along a busy section of State Highway 38.
Over the years, Big Rusty has experienced numerous acts of vandalism despite its historical significance.
