New York City Detective Guilty in Deadly Drunk Driving Case

MINEOLA, N.Y. — An NYPD detective pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated vehicular assault and other charges stemming from a 2023 drunken driving crash on the Meadowbrook State Parkway that left two women injured, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced.

George Moore, 40, admitted to charges including aggravated vehicular assault, second- and third-degree assault, and aggravated driving while intoxicated. The plea comes more than a year after the August 4, 2023, crash, which occurred while Moore was driving to work in Queens after a night of drinking in Rockville Centre.

“George Moore was heavily intoxicated after a night out in Rockville Centre but nevertheless got behind the wheel of his Mercedes, speeding along the Meadowbrook State Parkway and putting countless lives at risk,” DA Donnelly said in a statement. “His selfishness and reckless disregard upended the lives of two innocent women and landed him on the wrong side of the law.”

Investigators determined Moore was intoxicated and driving aggressively when he rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center lane of the parkway. The impact caused Moore’s Mercedes to strike the median, flip, and crash into a tree before coming to a stop engulfed in flames.

The female passenger in Moore’s car suffered serious injuries, including fractures to her wrist, foot, and spine. The driver of the Jeep sustained injuries to her back, shoulder, and knee. Moore himself suffered multiple fractures, including to his pelvis, arm, and leg.
