New York Community Mourns After 79-Year-Old Woman Killed by USPS Delivery Vehicle

A 79-year-old woman was struck and killed by a United States Postal Service delivery vehicle in New York on Sunday morning.

Mary Kerwin was struck by a USPS delivery vehicle at an intersection in East Aurora, New York around 10 a.m. on Sunday, according to an East Aurora Police Department news release .

The East Aurora Fire Department and AMR Ambulance Service responded to the scene. Kerwin was airlifted by Mercy Flight to the Erie County Medical Center, where she later died from serious injuries.

The USPS driver was not injured and was fully cooperative at the scene.

“The U.S. Postal Service and its employees are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of the East Aurora community,” USPS Strategic Communications Specialist Mark Lawrence told USA TODAY. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family. Safety is of paramount importance to the postal service, and we are investigating.”

As of Monday afternoon, the incident remained under investigation.
