Following a stabbing spree that claimed three lives, Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams were criticized by a number of Democrats.
According to several reports, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, New York City Councilman Keith Powers, Democratic New York Representative Ritchie Torres, and Democratic New York Representative Jerrold Nadler all requested explanations about why Ramon Rivera was free when he reportedly stabbed three individuals on November 18. Rivera had been arrested eight times before for a variety of charges and was out on bail on a grand larceny charge on the day of the event.
In a letter to the Daily Caller News Foundation on Sunday, Torres stated, “I am writing to express alarm at the complicity of the State and the City in the murder of three New Yorkers who were savagely stabbed to death in a homicidal rampage that took place in broad daylight.” The greatest offender is the NYC DOC [Department of Corrections], which released Ramon Rivera early so he could serve only nine months of a twelve-month sentence. This decision is illogical and unacceptable.
According to the New York Post, Rivera was released on supervised release by the New YorkDOC, provided he promised to show up for his court date on December 4.
According to a separate letter signed on November 21 by Nadler, Powers, Levine, and other Manhattan lawmakers, “all accounts indicate that Mr. Rivera’s case is a damning indictment of the failures of the criminal justice and mental health systems in New York City,” the New York Post reported. It’s possible that his killings may have been avoided.
During a press briefing on the incident on November 18, Adams stated that Rivera has a history of serious mental health problems. NBC New York reports that Rivera has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. According to the outlet, his victims, who were killed over the course of around two hours in three different locations, included Chang Wang, 67, Wilma Augustin, and 36-year-old Angel Lata Landi.
The reason he was on the streets is a genuine mystery. At the news conference, Adams stated. He was sentenced a few months ago, but it’s preliminary right now.
Beyond the letter, Torres’ offices had nothing more to say, and Nadler’s office took a while to reply to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request.
