JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol says a man from New York is in arrest after he reportedly caused a collision that killed his niece and three nephews by bringing his car to almost a stop on Interstate 95 to take a picture of the Florida Welcomes You sign.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Wednesday that 25-year-old Marvin Redondo-Funes is charged with four counts of aggravated homicide of a child and driving with a suspended or revoked license that causes substantial bodily harm. The collision happened close to the Georgia-Florida line early on July 1.
Redondo-Funes reportedly reduced his speed on the roadway, which has a posted speed limit of 70 mph, to just 1 or 2 miles per hour, according to authorities. Three of the four youngsters were killed instantly when a car behind him collided with the back of his car. Two days after being taken to the hospital, the fourth youngster passed away from his wounds.
All four of the youngsters were sat in a back row that could only accommodate three people, and investigators found that three of them were not wearing seatbelts. Official reports no longer include the children’s names.
According to reports, Redondo-Funes had taken the kids and his girlfriend on a family vacation to Florida by car from New York. He is still being held while the inquiry is ongoing.
Four young people were killed in a fatal highway photo stop, and a guy is facing serious accusations.
