A New York City woman was fatally shot in the head in front of her son as her husband was being robbed.On Monday, September 9, a New York City woman and mother was fatally shot in the face while defending her husband from attempted robbers. Multiple sources indicate that the suspects are still at large.
Police were dispatched to a Chinatown apartment complex on Market Street at 11 p.m., local time. When they arrived, they learned that Ying Zhu Liu had already died, according to Pix 11 and the New York Police Department.
Liu was 57.
Her husband informed the NYPD that two males followed him into his apartment building and then onto the elevator, which took him to the eighth level. Once exiting the elevator, the men attempted to rob him but were stopped by Liu, who heard the disturbance and stepped into the hallway. She was shot in the head and died shortly afterward, according to the news outlet. Liu’s adult son saw the fatal shooting.
PEOPLE contacted the NYPD for comment.
The perpetrators, who have not been arrested, made off with Liu’s husband’s phone, according to ABC 7. Although there is a security camera above Liu and her family’s flat, it is unclear whether it captured film of the incident.
The suspects fled on foot, according to NBC New York. Both wore ski masks. One also wore a black and red hooded jacket and white workout shoes. The second suspect wore a black hooded jacket with black leggings.
According to Pix 11, the alleged robbers are unlikely to have known Liu or her husband.
In an interview with ABC 7, one neighbor reported that a robbery had occurred in the neighborhood just the night before.
“It’s very scary but I think it’s the same two people who robbed a guy at 10:30 Sunday night, they robbed another guy, I think two young kids, it’s terrible,” Ann Valentino told me.
Emerson Coreis, who lives nearby, questioned, “Where are the cops? I don’t see a lot of cops around here, you know, more cops, Eric Adams, do something about it.”
