New York Suspect in Custody After Dramatic Indiana Toll Road Chase Ends in Crash

A rollover collision and arrest occurred Tuesday afternoon during a high-speed police pursuit on the Indiana Toll Road in La Porte, Indiana. The driver of a black Jeep SUV accelerated and ran away as a deputy tried to stop it close to the 52-mile marker.

The pursuit proceeded westward, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. At mile 31, authorities used tire deflation devices after a passenger threw out a bag at the 34-mile marker. The SUV crashed along US 421 after turning around close to the Portage Toll Barrier and then leaving at the 39-mile marker. The driver tried to escape on foot while the car rolled multiple times.

Kleve Panayoty, 42, of Brooklyn, New York, was taken into custody by police. He was accused of evading police, fleeing an accident site, and never obtaining a license. Two injured travelers were sent to a medical facility.

With a $755 bond, Panayoty is still being held at the La Porte County Jail. The pursuit involved the assistance of several law enforcement organizations.
