Newark Man Arrested for Firing Gun During Pub Altercation

NEWARK, DEFollowing an altercation outside McLaren’s Irish Pub early on Wednesday morning, Delaware State Police have arrested a man from Newark on many offenses.

Around 1:30 a.m., authorities were called to the Churchmans Road bar after hearing reports of a disturbance involving a man brandishing a gun. Durell Johns, 35, was found by investigators to have approached a woman in the parking lot, seized her violently, and threatened her.

Johns pulled a gun from his black Hyundai Sonata during the altercation and shot the woman’s cell phone, which was lying on the ground a few feet away, once. Then he ran away.

Troopers swiftly found John’s car, stopped it, and took him into prison without any problems.

Johns was accused of first-degree reckless endangerment, aggravated menacing, malicious interference with emergency communications, offensive touching, and possession of a handgun while committing a felony. After being arraigned, he was placed under a $31,500 secured bond and sent to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.

The inquiry is being carried out by the Criminal Investigative Unit of the Delaware State Police.
