Newport man sentenced to 30 months for illegal firearm possession

COVINGTON Ky.The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that Antonio Fox, 37, of Newport, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on Friday.

On May 23, 2024, Fox was pulled over by police during a traffic stop, and they found a loaded gun and another loaded magazine in his car. Despite being barred from possessing the handgun because of past felony convictions, he acknowledged having it.

Fox’s criminal history includes a conviction for possession with intent to distribute marijuana in 2010 and two convictions for illicit firearm possession in 2019. It is illegal for felons to own firearms or ammunition under federal law.

Fox must complete at least 85% of his sentence in accordance with federal sentencing standards. He will continue to be monitored by the U.S. Probation Office for three years after his release.

The Covington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) looked into the case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Spievack.

The sentencing emphasizes federal initiatives to stop repeat offenders from obtaining firearms illegally.
