Indianapolis, IndianaEveryone in Indianapolis and throughout Indiana is wondering if the big day will have a hint of snowy charm as the holidays approach. While other regions of the nation prepare for their own surprises, forecasts are still being made. Will this part of the Midwest have a calmer Christmas morning or wake up to the cozy blanket of winter?

Will It Snow This Christmas? What to Expect in 2024

The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that this winter will be warmer overall, however some regions may be more vulnerable than others. However, a few fortunate locations may experience the beauty of the season.

How Often Do We See a White Christmas?

Some hints regarding the usual locations of snowfall on December 25 can be found in historical data. Records from NOAA show that while certain areas almost usually get a white Christmas, others hardly ever do.

Snow usually persists throughout December in portions of Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. For instance, the likelihood of snowfall on Christmas Day in Minneapolis is over 80%. Three out of every four years, snowfall is common in northern Michigan and Minnesota, while the White Mountains of New Hampshire have the highest possibility (97%). Boston has only a 20% chance, but Northern Vermont has a 75% to 95% chance.

Snow possibilities in the western United States depend on moisture and elevation. Missoula, Montana, has a 98% chance, which is practically assured. At 94%, Idaho City, which is located just outside of Boise, is not far behind. About 50% of Salt Lake City is in the middle. The probability varies by geography in Colorado; Denver’s eastern plains have a 40% chance, while Boulder’s foothills have a 77% chance. At 44%, even Flagstaff, Arizona, has respectable odds.

In large parts of the Plains, South, and Mid-Atlantic, snow becomes scarce. For instance, Washington, D.C., has a mere 6% probability. On Christmas, moderate weather predominates in the forecast, with many locations in these regions being snow-free.

Looking Ahead: 2025 Predictions

There won’t be much snow this Christmas, according to the 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac. While much of New England is predicted to remain dry, northern Maine may see some dusting. Snow is not expected in the Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, or the Atlantic Corridor. Although the Heartland north of I-70 may have greater chances, the same is true for the Upper Midwest and Lower Great Lakes.

Parts of the High Plains may receive some holiday snow, and the Rockies appear to be in good shape. In the meanwhile, pleasant weather is predicted for the Pacific Southwest, Desert Southwest, and Pacific Northwest. Hawaii? Alaska is still a good chance for a snowy Christmas. Not at all.

How Indianapolis and Indiana Fit In

The Ohio Valley, where Indianapolis and the rest of Indiana are located, has a slight probability of snowfall on Christmas. The chances are better here than in many coastal or southern regions, yet this is not a guarantee. A holiday dusting is still possible, so there’s cause to remain optimistic.

Wrapping It Up

The possibility of a white Christmas in Indianapolis is not certain, but it is also not ruled out. At least this region is still in the running, even though the predictions for the rest of the country vary greatly. As the holiday draws closer, keep an eye on the skies because winter plans may surprise you. Happy Christmas!
